“Travelling with half-asleep children is hard enough, so spare a thought for these two fox parents. Listeners, meanwhile, get to root for the under-fox against a tiger with very large paws.”
A cosy cave for the night. Shame it belongs to a tiger.
The Tiger Eaters is a clever animal picture book about two foxes who must outwit a tiger to keep their cubs safe.
Cheekra, Shankra and their cubs are worn out after a long hunting trip, so they settle into a cave for the night. Then they spot a tiger's large paw prints. It is too dark to move on, and the cubs are half asleep. Can two quick-witted foxes get the better of a tiger?
Why children love it
- Calm Cheekra says "I have a plan", then whispers it, keeping listeners guessing.
- A tense moment when Kiraja the tiger stops in his tracks outside the cave, listening.
- Bold, angular art that looks like cut paper, from russet foxes to a striped tiger.

Quick answers
What is the story about at heart? Staying calm and thinking fast in a tight spot, like Cheekra.
Is it good for reading aloud? Yes. The worried whispers inside the cave and the suspense outside make a gripping read-aloud.
