“With a Sabarimala pilgrim in the family, children will want to know who that long climb is for. This turns the season’s songs and prayers into a hero they can picture.”
This prince needs no reins and lifts a mace like a toy.
The Story of Ayyappan is a vivid comic retelling of the legend of Ayyappan, the god of the Sabarimala hill shrine in Kerala.
When Mahishi, a buffalo-headed demon, rages across the heavens, the devas turn to Shiva and Vishnu, and Ayyappan is born from their union. Raised as Prince Manikandan of Pandalam, he learns so fast that his teachers are astonished. Yet those blinded by greed cannot see who he truly is.
Why readers love it
- A cover crowded with legend: a tiger, a buffalo-headed demon and pilgrims beside golden temple steps.
- Vavar, a bearded warrior who offers his men to fight beside the prince.
- A fiery battle as Manikandan and Vavar storm King Udayanan's stronghold.
