“Start it ten nights before Diwali, reading one day each evening, and it becomes your family’s own countdown. And the can’t-sleep excitement of the final night will sound very familiar.”
Ten days, one checklist and a whole house full of dust.
Ten Days to Diwali is a rhyming countdown picture book about a family getting their home ready for the festival of lights.
With ten days left until Diwali, Ria's house is in a whirl. There is dusting, painting and decorating to do, and a long list to tick off. Can Baba and his checklist get Ria, her dog Toto and Mumma ready in time?
Why children love it
- Each day counts down in rhyme, as Baba sweeps "from room to room".
- Handwritten checklist notes on the pages, from "Dusting of Fans" to mehendi and rangoli.
- Big sneezes when the curtains come down, with a loud "Achoo, Achoo!"

Quick answers
Is it good for reading aloud? Yes. Short rhyming lines and a day-by-day countdown make it easy for children to guess what comes next and join in.
What are mehendi and rangoli? Mehendi is henna drawn on the hands in patterns, and rangoli is a colourful floor design made with powder or flowers. Both are festive Diwali traditions.
