“Tell a new chess player the game has Indian roots and watch them sit up straighter. Between classes, this fills in the why behind the moves.”
Rooks, knights, checkmates and grandmasters, all in one friendly guide.
My Very First Chess Encyclopedia is a colourful beginner's guide to chess, covering its history, the moves, strategy and famous grandmasters.
Children read where the game began and how it changed over the centuries, then learn how each piece moves. They follow a game through its opening, middlegame and endgame, see how strategy shapes the result and meet grandmasters who earned a place among chess legends. Real images and easy explanations keep it friendly for new players.
What they'll discover
- How a knight moves in an L shape, the only piece that can jump over others.
- That chess grew from chaturanga, a Sanskrit word meaning "four-limbed".
- Why the opening of a game usually covers its first 10 to 15 moves.
Quick answers
What does checkmate mean? It comes from the Persian "shah mat", which the book explains as "the king is helpless". It is the move that wins the game.
Is it good for beginners? Yes. It explains how every piece moves, the three phases of a game, and check and checkmate, in simple words.
