“Before the little footprints are drawn for Janmashtami, share how baby Krishna arrived one rainy midnight. Dressing up as him means far more once they know the story.”
Pots of butter, a peacock feather and one very naughty boy.
Krishna for Babies is a gentle rhyming board book that introduces little ones to Krishna, the much-loved butter thief of Hindu stories.
On a quiet midnight in Mathura, a very special baby is born. Vasudeva carries him into the rainy night in a basket, sheltered by a great cobra, but the Yamuna is overflowing. Later, little Krishna becomes a cheeky butter lover who slips into any house with pots of butter.
Why children love it
- A tower of friends lifting Krishna high to reach a hanging pot of butter.
- Bouncy lines to say together, like "Yummy, yummy, the more the better."
- Deep blue night pictures, with the cobra's seven hoods spread over the sleeping baby.

Quick answers
Who is Ananta Sesha? The great serpent of Hindu stories. Here he is a seven-hooded cobra who covers baby Krishna like an umbrella.
Why is Krishna called the butter thief? He loved creamy white butter so much that he crept into homes to eat it, and the neighbours only pretended to complain.
