“Never underestimate a Corsican cheese, as one unlucky sailor finds out the hard way. Proud, prickly Corsicans and their vendettas give the jokes their island flavour.”
A Corsican chief with a very long name needs an escort home.
Asterix in Corsica is a classic comic adventure about an exiled chief, a scheming Roman praetor and an island that bows to no one.
For the anniversary of the victory at Gergovia, the Gauls hold a feast and raid the nearby Roman camps. At the camp of Totorum they find Boneywasawarriorwayayix, a Corsican chief exiled by Praetor Perfidius. So Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix go with him to Corsica, an island of family feuds and rebels hiding in the maquis.
Why readers love it
- A grand village feast, with old friends from earlier adventures as guests.
- The chief's name keeps getting mangled, into "Pomtiddlypom" and even "Boneywasawarriorheynonnyno".
- Sweeping scenery, like a sunlit panorama of the Roman port of Aleria.
By René Goscinny · Illustrated by Albert Uderzo · English · Asterix series
Quick answers
What is the maquis? Thick, scrubby wild bush covering much of Corsica, where rebels could stay out of sight.
Where does the chief's name come from? It plays on the old sea shanty "Boney Was a Warrior", about Napoleon, who was born on Corsica.
