“Expect to hear about a muster of peacocks at dinner for days afterwards. The witches’ rhymes are such fun that nobody notices it’s a grammar lesson.”
A parliament of owls in the pot? Only for the dashing Brungle.
A Tangle of Brungles is a rhyming picture book that plays with collective nouns, as witches brew a stew to summon a suitor.
An old witch wants to marry the dashing Brungle. To lure him, she and her fellow witches cook up the Great Brungle Stew, tossing in owls by the parliament, bats by the cloud and cobras by the quiver. But will Brungle actually turn up?
Why children love it
- Every group gets its proper name, from a clowder of cats to a bevy of swans.
- Bouncy rhymes, like the knights who come dancing "in bright orange tights".
- Glowing pictures of witches, cats, coiling snakes, peacocks and a bubbling red cauldron.

Quick answers
What is a collective noun? A word for a group, like a pack of wolves. The book picks out each one in bright capital letters.
Is it too spooky for little ones? There are witches, snakes and a bubbling cauldron in dark, dramatic art, but the tone is mischievous fun rather than fright.
