Choosing a book for a child you love can be surprisingly hard. Age is only a guide, since every child reads at their own pace, but it is a good place to start. Here is how we think about each stage, with a few picks from our shelves.
Ages 0 to 3: little hands first
Babies and toddlers learn through touch, sound and repetition. Look for sturdy pages, something to feel or peek through, and rhymes you can say together.
Ages 3 to 5: stories and first skills
This is when stories start to land: funny characters, repeated lines and pictures worth pointing at. Simple activity books build pencil control before writing begins.
Ages 6 to 8: puzzles, facts and games
Children who can read a little love a challenge. Puzzle books, surprising facts and quick card games keep them coming back on their own.
Ages 8 to 10: big ideas
Confident readers enjoy real stories of real people, clever plots and comics that reward a second read.

Akbar and Birbal: Classic Indian Stories
Ages 10 and up: longer reads, bigger builds
Pre-teens like to go deep, whether that is a life story they can’t put down or a detailed LEGO build that takes a whole afternoon.
