“School textbooks gave many parents their first Tagore, and this is a friendlier way to pass him on. A playful poem about make-believe is exactly where a love of poetry should begin.”
A little boy becomes a champa flower and secretly watches his mother.
The Champa Flower is a playful picture-book poem about a boy who spends one day as a champa flower.
Perched in the branches of the champa tree, he peeps out from his petals as his mother goes about her work. She is right there below him, but will she recognise her own little boy? It is a tender, teasing glimpse of the bond between a child and his mother.
Why children love it
- A poem from Tagore's classic The Crescent Moon, a gentle first taste of his writing.
- Lines to savour aloud, like "I would slyly open my petals".
- Warm painted pictures of a shady champa tree, a cowshed and a lamp at dusk.
By Rabindranath Tagore · Illustrated by Jaikar · English
