“Mukesh does with real creatures what children do with toy animals: line them up and sell tickets. Ruskin Bond is at his most playful here, an easy first taste of his stories.”
A house lizard in a shoebox is just the start.
Mukesh Starts a Zoo is a funny illustrated chapter book about two friends who open a homemade zoo with some very unlikely animals.
Mukesh dreams of becoming a star zookeeper, so he and his friend Teju from next door set out to build a zoo. Their star attractions include a lizard from the veranda, a prayer-chanting parrot, a yellow-eyed dog and the washerman's donkey. Then it is time to show the visitors around.
Why children love it
- Teju's clever way of catching a lizard, with a stick and a shoebox.
- Koki and Dolly busily selling tickets at the zoo counter.
- Cheerful colour pictures, from a caged green parrot to a toothy donkey.
