“The striped jamakkalam rolled out at every family function gets a story worthy of it here. It’s a proud, lovely way to show children the craft behind something so familiar.”
Thatha must weave a jamakkalam for the goddess. Then his hands falter.
From Bhavani, with Love is a lyrical picture book about a girl, her weaver grandfather and a very special jamakkalam.
Sumi's Thatha, a skilled weaver in Bhavani, has been picked to weave a jamakkalam for the goddess in the temple, the greatest honour the family has known. But when his hands begin to fail and the pit loom goes quiet, Sumi has to find a way to help.
Why children love it
- Stripes that flow like the Kaveri, Bhavani and Amudha rivers meeting at Kooduthurai.
- Real photographs mixed with painting, like the cover's motorbike piled high with bright yarn.
- A wooden shuttle that sails across the loom like a little boat.
