“Sons need this story just as much as daughters do. Seeing village girls dream of becoming carpenters and doctors quietly widens every child’s idea of who can do what.”
One forest spell, and suddenly Bhopali's girls are free to dream.
Choooo Mantar is a bright, thought-provoking picture book about village girls who long to choose their own futures.
Jivuba dreams of becoming a singer, but she is expected to marry instead. So Dammu, a wise forest apsara, works a little magic to set things right. Soon the call rings out, "Go to school, Sultana! Become a doctor!" But not everyone is pleased. And what will happen once the spell wears off?
Why children love it
- Big dreams for the village girls, from doctor and carpenter to singer.
- A spread full of giant, scrawled "hahaha"s as visitors from nearby villages laugh.
- Swirling, rainbow-bright skies over a hillside village of red-roofed houses.
